Little Brother & Evidence at The Black Cat in Washington D.C. I had been looking forward to this show for a few months. My new friend in hip-hop, "E" Hip-Hop Oldhead, was going to be at the show with his son EJ. I was excited to check out a new venue and hear a great show from my favorite artists. I had no idea how incredible the experience would actually be. As you can see from the show coverage over the last several months, Little Brother is a group I follow closely. I had been to a couple of shows over the summer, but this was the first show after the release of the much anticipated album Getback. In addition to Little Brother, Evidence (from my other favorite group Dilated Peoples) was opening as a solo act. I've admired Evidence for a long time. In recent months, I've gotten to know him better as a person through the Dilated Peoples documentary Release Party and various interviews. In many ways, Evidence's background in hip-hop parallels my own, obviously deviating by the fact he went on to become a successful MC. The Black Cat is a decent size venue with two very long bars on either side of the room. I enjoyed a few choice beverages of the beer nature as the first act, Reef The Lost Cauze, was performing on stage. It was fairly easy to make my way close to the stage as Evidence began to perform. I was able to get even closer after 10 minutes or so, settling into an area by the left speakers and close to the 'backstage' area inhabited by various friends of the respective artists or whoever. Evidence masterly performed many of the songs from The Weatherman as well as Dilated Peoples songs such as "Another Sound Mission" and "Get By". I've seen Evidence perform a few times before and I was more than entertained. He's a very talented lyricist as well as a producer. Not to mention a cool dude. I had the pleasure of meeting him after his set when he came by to see E & EJ. I talked to him later after the show. I bought his CD (which he autographed) and chatted about the tour. I let him know I have been a long-time Dilated Peoples fan. Never did I think when I went to this show that I'd have a chance to talk to Evidence. It was definitely an experience I'll remember for a long time. What can I say about Little Brother that I haven't said before? These guys are at the top of their game. Phonte the showman and Rapper Big Pooh the low-key lyrical assassin. Even though I have seen their show several times, I get amped for them every time. They performed several songs from Getback including my favorite "Extrahard". They also did the classic "Lovin It", a few of their older songs as well as some from the And Justus For All mixtape. Phonte was hilarious once again as he did his stand-up comedy thing. DJ Flash and vocalist Darien Brockington were on point. I want to give special thanks to "E" and his son EJ. I look forward to hanging with them again at a future show. Until next time... -Dogmatic
